It can be difficult to prepare children for their first appointment with the dentist. The safety and comfort of children is the prime consideration for parents and ultimately, this involves making sure children are comfortable and prepared to step up to the dental chair for the first time.

Whilst there are many techniques that can be carried out to prepare children before the appointment. On the day of the appointment, one of the considerations that have been raised is whether it’s safe to consider pediatric sedation.

Sedation is not dangerous, and children who need dental treatment have been sedated in the past. This helps reduce fear and anxiety.

What Is Paediatric Sedation?

Pediatric sedation is the use of a sedative or a tranquilizing drug in order to help children relax. Children are expected to sit comfortably once provided and help forget what happened during their appointment.

Rest assured that during sedation, the pediatrician will have a big responsibility to uphold to ensure your child is comfortable. Typically, your child will be provided with an oxygen mask whilst being closely monitored. Whilst they may feel disorientated, it is expected to relax them. The parent is expected to keep them company to keep them comfortable, using coping methods to keep them happy.

After treatment, your child is expected to recover within 90 to 120 minutes, depending on the level of sedation. There is expected to be no side effects and is expected to be fully awake.

What To Feed Your Child Before Sedation?

It’s important your child’s stomach is kept empty before sedation. There’s a chance of vomiting if even a small amount of food or drink is consumed.

These are the instructions that should be followed:

  • Do not give sugary treats at least eight hours before sedation. Treats such as hard foods, gum, candy, fizzy drinks and dry meat. It’s encouraged that you give your child clear liquids such as water.
  • Avoid drinking any form of liquid two hours before sedation. If your child complains he is hungry or thirsty, use positive lingual to encourage them on how well they are doing, including offering a treat a day after treatment.
